Resources for Movements
Khanya’s orientation to movement building has included the need to develop resources for movement building, to ensure the independence of the working class, and not being donor driven. In 2006 Khanya’s Board of Trustees set up the House of Movements, to provide important infrastructure to the organisations of the working class, a space to meet, engage and build a new society.
In response to the outbreak of xenophobia in Alex township in 2008, Khanya initiated the Anti-Xenophobia Coalition Campaign (2008), of all winter school participant organisations including ngos, communities, movements. The organisations of the African diaspora responded positively and joined the campaign- Kenzyans, Somalis, Zimbabwe, Congolese etc. Khanya held detailed discussions with activists to understand the sources of the xenophobia and tw KJ editions for produced, resources for movements.
The coalition took the campaign into the townships to raise awareness through food and cultural activities in Kathorus with local organisations, and the JBF festival at the Drill hall.
