We Are All Marikana!
The Winter School in 2012 focused on the Crisis of Resistance, and activists agreed to meet one month later on 14 August for an Activist Forum to set about working more closely together. This meeting was fortuitous as on 12 August 2012 the Marikana Massacre took place that shocked the foundations of the new democracy, a masscare of workers in a labour dispute struggling for a living wage.
The Forum agreed to form the WAAM campaign, to raise awareness and mobilise working people. Importantly, it began the process of analysis of Marikana, and its inextricable link to neoliberal capitalism and continuing apartheid legacies: the conclusions were important in shaping khanya’s movement building approach and analysis of SA: the crisis is organic and there is a need for a new cycle of struggle and a new cadre. [books/slide/exhibition] this was later taken up in the JBF.
